Flight AF 447 1st June 2009

A330-203, registered F-GZCP

Phase 5 of the sea search operations, first dives

«Accident site 4h in the morning » site plan

A last polish of the ROV’s 6 cameras. A last look at some photos for the investigators.

Another 3h30 of descent and they’ll discover the first real time images of the site.

They’ve been going over every aspect of the site for 4 days: 26,000 photos and 1,200 m2 of debris. The aim of this inspection is to identify the airplane parts that have been transformed into formless debris: by the accident, in order to chart the zone.

This preparatory work is essential to define the first areas to be searched.

Emmanuel Delbarre, BEA Safety Investigator/ Deputy to the IIC on board the “Ile de Sein”

For the first part of the ROV’s mission, we’ve identified 6 main points to examine. These 6 points could be examined in their entirety tomorrow. One of these points that you see here is for example shown in this photo. This photo after analysis, discussion, further analysis, consensus and validation within the group has allowed us to determine where to start first.”

Like the investigators, all the personnel on board are following the rythmn of the preparations: making boxes to raise the recorders, refining lifting procedures so that they correspond to legal requirements.

Chief  Warrant Officer-Patrice Grenouillet, Air Transport Gendarmerie /Officer of the judicial police.

The BEA doesn’t want to touch the recorders, [they can only be] touched by the hands of the judicial authorities so that there are no ambiguities after the event for the civil parties.”

The recorders are what everyone is hoping to see on the first images from the seafloor.

The first discovery came later however.

Frédéric Walbrou : BEA Safety Investigator/ Flight recorder specialist

This is the electronic part of the data recorder. On flight recorders there is the memory unit, which is protected and the electronic part that is the interface between the airplane and the memory unit. So here we have the electronic part that probably detached from the memory unit on impact. So where exactly that is, we need to validate this, but it’s likely somewhere in the middle of this debris field.”

The logiw of the distrbution of the parts on the seafloor is not absolute. The investigators will follow the pre-defined procedures to the letter.

Emmanuel Delbarre: BEA Safety Investigator/ Deputy to the IIC on board the «Ile de Sein »

Following the discovery of the chassis yesterday, we swept all around on a radius of about 20 metres, 20 to 30 metres, and we found nothing, so we opted for a systematic sweep, which we started this morning. A systematic sweep leaves no stone unturned so it’s slow going. Sometimes there are stops so we can observe parts detected, which explains why it takes so long.”

The searches will be long. From now on the teams will relay each other on a 24 hour basis in order to focus on the seafloor for the flight recorders.
